Often times, finding the perfect present that embodies the gratitude and appreciation that you have for your mother or mother figure is hard to come by. In reality, no card, a bouquet of flowers, or thoughtful gift can truly say all the things you feel within your heart, and every year around this time I find myself racking my brain for ideas to give/get for my mom. However, this past year I had a realization about my life and what is really important to me. A realization about what makes me and those around me happiest, and how can I touch them in a way that they will remember long after a flower has withered or a card has been thrown away.
I found that the best gift anyone could ever receive is a memory - an experience so profound it etches itself in the lining of one's heart and flows through them with every heartbeat. Something that blesses both the giver and the receiver. Something you can pull out and watch as the scene replays like a projector on the back of your eyelids, long after the people in the memory are gone. This gift that truly continues to give long after the day has passed can be a number of unique things and often times are a culmination of many different things. Things that hold meaning in the hearts of those who will experience it with you.
One thing I do every year with the mother’s in my life is go to breakfast or brunch with my Mom and Grandma. One of my favorite places in Boise is Boise Juice Company for breakfast or brunch. Their bowls and smoothies are super filling and their juices are great meal replacements! We love to get our day started sitting out in the sun eating our bowls. It’s one of my favorite springtime moments, to be honest. My go-to bowl is the Original with fiber and fruit protein, my Grandma loves the Peanut Butter Raspberry bowl and my Mom grabs a juice, her favorite is the Golden Greens. After brunch, we head on over to Edwards Greenhouse on Hill Road, just around the corner from Boise Juice Co. From 11 am- 3 pm they do a flower potting event. We always enjoy stuffing as many flowers as we can into our pots to replant later that day at my Mom’s house. They also will take your picture to mark the memory, this usually stays on my mom's fridge until the next year when we do it all over again. It's $8 a pot and they print the picture for you after. Afterward, we usually like to walk around the greenhouse taking in the beautiful flowers around us and talking about what we want our gardens to look like one day, even though we never change anything about them.
One of the last, and arguably one of my favorites are the Paddle Boats at Julia Davis Park. Some of my favorite memories happened on those boats growing up. My Grandma always would take us to them and we would paddle along the pond enjoying the shade, and the company of the ducks. In the late summer, the cottonwood trees made it feel like it was snowing and made the whole experience even more magical as a child. I would, however, recommend keeping your phones close or safe in the car. I can not tell you how many phones we have lost to the pond over the years, each of which are memories I look back on often and laugh all over again as my mom screamed and considered jumping into the water after it. I am not a mother myself, so I can not attest to what all mother’s want. However, I feel it is human nature to share experiences with those you love and to be able to cherish those memories for a lifetime to come. Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the people you have near, to give thanks to those who raised you and to foster memories for both the giver and the receiver. Happy Mother's Day to all the Mom's in my life, you have helped to shape me into the woman I am today. I encourage you all to find the things that bring about memories for you and your families, moments that ensue laughter, tears, and joy alike. I promise you your mother’s day, and life will be much better for it.
