Get The Skinny on Essential Oils

You might feel like essential oils have been all the rage the last few years, but these plant extracts are much more than a new trend! In fact, they are deeply rooted in traditions of the past and have been used in ancient civilizations all over the world for many health-promoting benefits.

What exactly are essential oils?

Inside many plants hidden in their roots, seeds, flowers, and bark are highly concentrated chemical compounds. These compounds are what we call essential oils. They’re what give a plant its scent, protect it from environmental threats, and even assist with pollination!

Simply put, they are the plant’s entire essence!

Why are they beneficial to our health?

Each and every essential oil varies in makeup, which means they are completely unique in how they can assist our bodies. And because they’re naturally occurring compounds 50-70x more powerful than herbs they can effectively address specific concerns. This has made them a popular choice for those looking for more toxin-free solutions. People love that they can use them for a variety of ailments without having to buy multiple products or worry about dangerous side effects.

For example, Lavender contains compounds that make it valuable for soothing skin irritations and promoting restful sleep.  Similarly, Grapefruit reduces the appearance of blemishes while also supporting a healthy metabolism. Thankfully, we now have increasing scientific evidence and research showing that essential oils can be safely used in a wider range of day-to-day practices and routines to address things like:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia or disrupted sleep
  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Skin irritations, discoloration, and acne
  • Household cleaning
  • And much, much more!

So, how do you use them?

Traditionally, essential oils are used in three ways:

  1. Topically: Applied directly to the skin over areas of concern.
  2. Aromatically: Diffused or inhaled.
  3. Internally: Taken within a capsule or added to food, drinks, or a BJC wellness shot!
